Week 10: #23 Is this really the end? Or just the beginning...

This was a very challenging project since I was not familiar with many of the exercises. It was hard finding time but allowing a week for each made it workable. I particularly enjoyed the YouTube exercise. This was something I heard about but never took the time to explore. I found MySpace and Social Networking to be the least desirable sites for me. I prefer more face to face contact, and with people I know.

Doing the 23 things introduced me to sites that I was not aware of. Even though I am not proficient at using them, at least I know that they are available. I feel a little more knowledgeable than I was several weeks ago.

Week 9: #22 Downloadable Media

My family and I are big users of audio books. I have used HCPL's site but I was not familiar with LibriVox or Wowio. I concluded that Wowio seemed to be more user friendly than LibriVox, but I still prefer HCPL's site. All that is needed is your library card.

Week 9: #21 Podcasts, Smodcasts!

After looking at the three podcast directories, I found that Podcast.net was the easiest one to use. Since I am currently involved in home improvement projects, I typed this in the search engine, and "The Money Pit" came up.

I enjoyed looking at the various videos. The animal catagory had some very entertaining but very serious ones.

Week 8: # 19 Web-based Apps

I created an account and found it to be an interesting program. Having access to all your documents from any computer can be a very useful tool for anyone. I looked at the template library. There were templates for resumes and cover letters. A handy tool for anyone who is preparing for job searching. I thought the tool bar was very user friendly, and I particularly liked the extra features.

Week 8: # 18 Social Networking

After looking at several social networking sites, I concluded that this is not something that I would occupy my time with. I can't imagine why people would put so much information out there for the whole world to see. Myspace.com being one of those sites. Since I am a dog lover, I checked out Dogster. I clicked on the adoptable dog link but there were no dogs within a hundred miles. This certainly is not accurate. I checked infieldparking.com since my husband loves NASCAR racing. Not impressed with it. Must be a man thing! One networking site that I heard was useful is linkedin.com. This is a great way to expand your contacts in your professional field.

Week 7: #17 Blog About Technology

This past week I learned how to convert a frame relay WAN circuit into an MPLS circuit that has 10% tagged basic packets, and 90% tagged enhanced packets so that the QoS (Quality of Service) could provide efficient means in which the UDP packets for the VOIP (Voice Over IP) would supercede the TCP packets for HTTP using a Cisco 2811 router. After this was completed, I installed a WAN optimization device so that the packets could then be compressed and cached. I used WCCP 2.0 for this as opposed to inline mode. All in all, not a bad day.

Just kidding! I copied that from another website. I actually used a few popular online auction websites (eBay, Craigslist) to sell several items. As they say, "one man's junk is another man's treasure." I found it to be fun, easy and cheaper to sell my items online as opposed to taking out an ad in the local newspaper or having a garage sale. Within a few days, the items had received bids higher than I anticipated. Speaking of newspapers, I now find it easier to use www.weather.com, www.cnn.com, and www.msn.com to gather information about news instead of reading the newspaper or watching television.

Week 7: #16 So what's in a wiki?

Before doing this exercise, I heard of "wiki" and "wikipedia" but never really knew much about them. They were just cute sounding words. I now know that wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and how they are used. I can see where this could be helpful for the Library Friends Group or a Library Book Club.

After I accessed the iHCPL wiki, I created a login account and added to the favorite blogs on restaurants and television shows. I especially enjoyed seeing what others said were their favorites.

Week 6: #15 On Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

In Rick Anderson's article, "Away from the Icebergs," he speaks about how dramatically the world has change in the last decade. Libraries are no longer the only source for information. The internet is now available, and libraries need to adapt to the technological trends in order to better serve our customers. Technology will not replace the written word but it is just another tool to better serve the public.

I did an advanced search for "Learning 2.0" in Blog posts, in tags and in the Blog Directory and found that the results were different. Popular search was interesting for current events.

Week 4: Finding Feeds

After looking at all the suggested sites for newsfeeds, I found ten by using the Blogline search tool. This was the easiest. Topix was interesting for the news but I had no interest in it. I found Syndic8 to be the hardest. Technorati was too overwhelming with the constant updates.

I am very careful about posting personal information on the web. When using my credit card, which is rare, I make sure the site is secure. Even then, I always have the feeling that I gave it out for anyone to see.

Many times I hesitate to explore new things because of time restraints. However, once I convinced myself that this was worth learning, the registration process was fairly simple.
